Vajreshwari
Devi's Temple is important traditionally as well as historically.
It was built somewhere in 1850's in the era of Peshwas. This temple
is surrounded by fort-like walls giving the impression that it
is surrounded by a fort.
On climbing up the 52
steps of the temple we come across an "Agnikund".
A statue of a tiger lies in the arena of the temple since the
tiger is supposed to be the "Vahan" of the Vajrehwari
Devi. Local people still believe that a tiger comes here to seek
Devi's blessings. The ritual of sacrificing animals to please
the goddess is still on in this temple.
The original name of the place
where this temple is located is Wadavali, which lies in Thane
District of Maharashtra State about 75 kms from Mumbai city.
Buses are available from Mumbai-Central
bus stand for Vajreshwari. The other route is from Thane railway
station(central railway) by bus. Also it is just 5 kms. from Village
Ambadi(near Virar) situated on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. Many
hotels and "Dharmashalas" are available to stay at Vajreshwari.
Another enchanting thing about
Vajreshwari are the natural hot water geysers situated at Vajreshwari,
Akloli & Ganeshpuri. The water of these geysers is believed
to be medicated and is used as a cure for many diseases.
